Villages along the A24 – Washington, West Sussex

Continuing the mini series exploring the villages along the Worthing to London road, the A24, Julia and I have come to rural community of Washington. It lies at the foot of the South Downs on the north face. John Ireland, the composer, live here in a windmill and just under two thousand years ago there was a large Anglo-Saxon community here.

Bypassed in 1960, the village is small and compact, with St Mary’s church at the highest point and the rest of the houses lying beneath it.

Sadly it as a dull day when we whizzed round, but we hope you enjoy the quick look round.
