Today, Cynthia Julian and I are taking a stroll around the back of Amberley Castle, in West Sussex, on a public footpath towards the river Arun and the railway crossing. Amberley Castle stands in the village of Amberley, West Sussex.
The castle was erected as a 12th-century manor house and fortified in 1377. It has high curtain walls, internal towers in each corner, a hall and a gateway. It was used as a fortress by the bishops of Chichester. It is a Grade I listed building and in use as privately owned hotel. Adjacent to it are the Sussex Wildlife Trust Wild brooks, a flood plain and favour place for birds and bird-watchers.
