The Green Roof Project – What’s the Point of a Green Roof?

Part One of a special miniseries. Today I meet up with Tony Whitbread, President of the Sussex Wildlife Trust, at his home near Storrington in West Sussex. He is having a garage roof greened-up ; a small wild flower meadow growing on the top. Part of the concept is to use soil types collected from various Sussex areas to see what grows and what wild life is attracted to the roof.

To help him, Tony has enlisted Lee Evans from Green Roof Revival (website link below), a specialist in green roofing. Lee and his team advise, design and are hands-on, getting the structure and substrate right.

I talk to them both to discover more about this fascinating work. I shall return in the Autumn to see how the greening up process is going.
