Tales of Olde Sussex by Philip Mercer – The Rackham Rats

The Sussex curate, Philip Mercer, collected stories from his parishioners in the early 19th century and published them in a book called, ‘Tales of Olde Sussex’. Now whether any are true or not is entirely another matter.

Rats plagued millers Josiah and Edmund Payne in 1762. But the way to get rid of them, when trapping, poisoning and setting cats upon them didn’t work, was simple. Could it work for the Payne family?
