The Sussex curate, Philip Mercer, collected stories from his parishioners in the early 19th century and published them in a book called, ‘Tales of Olde Sussex’. Now whether any are true or not is entirely another matter.
This story that I relate today concerns one John Grayson, a retired pirate who lived in Arundel, and later South Stoke in West Sussex in the 1780s. It was always assumed that he had a secret supply of great wealth, but, did he?
