Sowing Clover at Willow Farm – Chapter 6

I am reading Ramble Round Willow Farm, Chapter 6, Sowing Clover. One hundred years ago the ways of the country were very different. Farming particularly was more hands on. In this episode, we learn how, why and when to sow a field of clover using four sticks and basket round the neck.

I have been reading a few chapters from this charming book by Arthur O. Cooke, written in just before the First World War. Farming at home, and England becoming self-sufficient, was soon to be essential because the convoys bringing imported food were about to be targeted by the Germans and without our farmers the country would have starved.

This became more important in the Second World War. I hope you enjoy the reading.
