The lovely Julia Hartley, Cheryl Craggs, Robert Craggs and I, ye olde Bald Explorer (Richard Vobes) climb the steep (perhaps not really that steep!) motte that hugs the historic market town of Brampton in Cumbria.
The Norman castle was an earth and timber motte-and-bailey fortification raised upon the south-western end of a ridge of high ground known as Brampton Ridge. It stands over 100 metres above sea level and created by construction of a ditch around the summit of the ridge and using the spoil to create the mound. It most likely had a timber palisade. To the north west lies a plateau which may have been the site of the bailey.
