Tree Identification – In Search of the Wild Service Tree

Julia and I have taken a trip to The Mens, an ancient woodland in West Sussex situated between Petworth and Wisborough Green to search for the rare Will Service Tree.

The Mens is a Sussex Wildlife Trust Nature reserve. A largely unexplored wood, it certainly has an untamed, mysterious feeling to it and many people describe it as ‘wild’. The unusual name of this area comes from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘ge-mænnes’, meaning common land.
