The Baronet of Stopham Church in West Sussex

I am privileged to meet Sir Brain Barttelot, the Baronet of Stopham in today’s video. He takes me around the beautiful Saxon church of Stopham, near Pulborough in West Sussex. The Barttelot family can trace their lineage back to Norman times and before to the original Stopham family. Much of their history us recorded in the unique collection of brasses displayed in the church.

The earliest parts of the Church of England parish church of St Mary the Virgin are 11th-century Saxon or Saxo-Norman, and the remainder of the building is 12th-century Norman. New windows were inserted in the chancel in the 13th century and in the nave in the 14th century. The west tower was rebuilt about 1600.

Colonel Sir Brian Barttelot Bt OBE DL is the fifth Baronet, a Colonel in the Coldstream Guards and a Vice-President of the Standing Council of the Baronetage.

Join us as we explore this charming place of worship.
